Heat Rash: Symptoms and How to Treat It - The New York Times

Image
This itchy, bumpy condition is often confused for other ailments, but it's always an indication that you should get out of the sun. With many parts of the country experiencing dangerous levels of heat, some may have noticed itchy, red bumps cropping up on certain parts of the body. Excessive heat and humidity can make you more prone to heat rash, a common condition that develops on the neck, shoulders, chest and folds of the skin. But what is heat rash, exactly, and what should you do if you get it? We spoke to a few experts to find out. What is heat rash? "Heat rash" is not exactly a term that health care providers use to make an official diagnosis, said Dr. Angela Lamb, a board-certified dermatologist at Mount Sinai in New York City. Miliaria, as it's technically called, occurs when the sweat glands and ducts in your skin get blocked because of high heat and humidity. "Then, when your sweat gets trapped beneath the skin, you get these little fine pimples or bli

Why Do I Get Broken Capillaries On The Face? We Explain + Tips | mindbodygreen - mindbodygreen

If you've noticed tiny red lines on your skin that resemble mini veins, you might actually be looking at dilated capillaries, not necessarily broken ones. "Actual broken capillaries result in bruising as blood is allowed to leak out into surrounding tissue," board-certified dermatologist Rebecca Marcus, M.D., FAAD, tells mbg. "Dilated capillaries, on the other hand, result in tiny red blood vessels that are visible at the skin's surface," she says. These fine branchlike vessels are always underneath the surface but may appear more pronounced in certain areas—oftentimes around the nose and on the cheeks. There's a long list of potential causes for dilated and broken capillaries, some occasional and others not so much. Those with rosacea frequently have these tiny red vessels on display, but more on that in a bit.

Emory doctors join forces with the Family Heart Foundation to help patients with familial hypercholesterolemia - News-Medical.Net

Image
Doctors from the Emory Heart & Vascular Center are joining forces with the Family Heart Foundation, a leading research and advocacy organization, to find and more widely treat undiagnosed patients living with a common genetic condition that causes very high levels of unhealthy cholesterol, heightening the risk for heart attacks and strokes even at a young age. The condition, called familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), has long flown under the medical radar. Although it's one of the most common genetic causes of early heart attacks and premature coronary heart disease, FH is dramatically underdiagnosed in patients. Studies suggest that one in 250 people have FH but that only about 30 percent of those individuals will receive a formal diagnosis. Without proper treatment, impacted individuals have up to a 20-fold increased risk of a heart attack or development of premature coronary artery disease. As part of the new collaborative project, Emory Heart & Vascular

Deep Learning Model Predicts 10-Year Cardiovascular Disease Risk from Chest X-Rays - Diagnostic Imaging

Image
Researchers have developed a deep learning model that predicts the 10-year risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) from a single routine chest X-ray. The model had a similar performance to the established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk score, according to new study findings presented at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2022 Annual Meeting. "Our deep learning model offers a potential solution for population-based opportunistic screening of cardiovascular disease risk using existing chest X-ray images," said lead author Jakob Weiss, M.D., a radiologist affiliated with the Cardiovascular Imaging Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital and the AI in Medicine program at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. "This type of screening could be used to identify individuals who would benefit from statin medication but are currently untreated." Current guidelines recommend estimating the 10-year risk of MACE to

Is aspirin a wonder pill or does it do more harm than good? - Daily Mail

Image
Is aspirin a wonder pill or does it do more harm than good? It's hailed for helping prevent heart attacks — and now potentially even cancer. But worrying reports also link it to fatal falls and a higher risk of internal bleeding By John Naish for the Daily Mail Published: 22:09 GMT, 21 November 2022 | Updated: 22:12 GMT, 21 November 2022 Forty years ago a bountifully cheap painkiller was hailed as a wonder drug for preventing heart disease by making blood less sticky and thus less liable to form artery-clogging clots. Doctors began to recommend that anyone over the age of 55 who worried they were at risk of a heart attack could opt to take the drug daily. Then, eight years ago, this same medicine was proclaimed to be one of our best weapons against cancer, thanks to its ability to reduce levels of cell-damaging inflammation in our bodies. Again, some doctors began to recommend taking a daily p

White spots on skin: 8 causes and treatments - Insider

Image
White spots on your skin can signal idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis, a result of UV exposure. They may also be leftover scars from eczema or tinea versicolor, a fungal infection. Flat warts look like light-colored shiny patches that are caused by HPV. Sometimes, white spots that crop up on your skin can be harmless — but other times, they could signal a serious condition.  That's why, it's important to take note of other symptoms you may experience and the exact appearance of the spots so that you can help your doctor identify the cause.  Here are eight causes of white spots on the skin, and how to treat them.  1. Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (IGH) While most people associate sun spots with a darker pigment, white spots can al

What Causes Dry Eyelids & How To Treat Them, From Derms - mindbodygreen

As you can feel, the skin around the eyes is much different from the rest of the face. "Eyelid skin is amongst the thinnest skin of anywhere on the body, and therefore it should come as no surprise that it's extra-sensitive and delicate," board-certified dermatologist Rebecca Marcus, M.D., tells mbg. This is one reason why the under-eyes and eyelids tend to age quickly, showing fine lines and wrinkles before other, thicker parts of the face like the cheeks. The eye itself is also prone to irritation—just think about how easy it is to get eye shadow, eyeliner, eyelashes, or even dust and smaller particles stuck in there. Plus, there are hair follicles where your lashes and brows grow, which is another spot that's prone to infection and irritation. Not to mention, plenty of people wear eye makeup every single day. Whether it be shadow, liner, or mascara, prioritizing clean ingredients is a must given that the product is so close to your eye. With all of these factors co
