Alcohol consumption may have positive and negative effects on ... - Science Daily

Image
While past research has indicated that moderate alcohol consumption can lower one's risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), more recent studiessuggest that moderate levels of drinking may be hazardous to heart health. A new analysis led by Boston University School of Public Health and Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University (Friedman School) now sheds new insight on this complex relationship between alcohol consumption and the progression of CVD. Published in the journal BMC Medicine , the study found that alcohol consumption may have counteractive effects on CVD risk, depending on the biological presence of certain circulating metabolites -- molecules that are produced during or after a substance is metabolized and studied as biomarkers of many diseases. The researchers observed a total of 60 alcohol consumption-related metabolites, identifying seven circulating metabolites that link long-term moderate alcohol consumption with an increased risk of CVD

Naotaifang III against cerebral ischemia injury | DDDT - Dove Medical Press

Introduction Ischemic stroke (IS) is a common acute cerebrovascular accident, which accounts approximately for 79% of all strokes, 1 and has become one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) is an acute IS treatment that is limited to use within 4.5 hours of IS onset. 2 However, due to the narrow time window and potential bleeding risk, only 2–10% of IS patients worldwide benefit from thrombolysis, and only 1.2–3.8% in China. 3,4 Brain ischemic injury involves multiple mechanisms, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, calcium overload, apoptosis, and glutamate excitotoxicity. Previous studies have shown that gut microbiota may regulate cerebral ischemia injury through the microbe-gut-brain axis, 5,6 but the exact mechanism has not been fully elucidated. As the second human genome and the largest immune organ, the gut microbiota plays an important role in maintaining body homeostasis. Recent studies have shown

PlaqueTec recruits first ten patients in cardiovascular disease trial - BioPharma-Reporter.com

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide, with CAD being the most common type, accounting for 49% of the 18.6 million CVD-related deaths in 2019. The trial has been designed to improve understanding of the pathobiology of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ACVD) and how it varies between individuals, to aid the development of new treatments. PlaqueTech will use its blood sampling device, the liquid biopsy system (LBS) to collect samples at multiple sites along a patient's diseased coronary artery. Thousands of proteins and other blood molecules will be measured in each sample, enabling the assessment of trans-plaque gradients between samples. These data will be analysed and used to generate a more detailed picture of the disease and enhance clinicians' understanding of which proteins and biomolecules play key roles in CAD progression towards heart attack. Are Swollen Feet a Symptom of Congestive Heart Failure? - Health Central

Image
In this Article If you've ever been trapped in a seat on a long airplane ride, you might have wobbled off the flight with swollen ankles and feet. It's common: When you sit for long periods at a time, the force of gravity pulls the fluid in your blood downward, causing it to pool in your lower extremities. Most times, this is relatively harmless and quickly goes away once you start moving around. But swollen feet can also be a symptom of congestive heart failure, a progressive and potentially life-threatening disease, "where the heart can't pump the blood well enough to support the needs of the body," says Anum Minhas, M.D., who specializes in cardiovascular disease in women at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, MD. About 6.2 million adults in the U.S. have heart failure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and it's the leading cause of hospitalization in people over the age of 65. Since the condition can get worse over time, it'

New statement highlights gaps in knowledge of post-cardiac arrest ... - News-Medical.Net

A new consensus statement from the American Heart Association Emergency and Cardiovascular Care Committee and the Neurocritical Care Society calls for more research to address areas of post-cardiac arrest care that have limited research. The statement published today simultaneously in the Association's flagship journal Circulation and in Neurocritical Care , the Neurocritical Care Society's journal. Cardiac arrest affects over 600,000 people in the United States annually, with a worldwide annual incidence of 30 to 97 individuals per 100,000 population. While guidelines address some relevant topics based on large bodies of scientific evidence, like temperature control and neurological prognostication, many important subject areas have less evidence to support practice or to be included in guidelines. A scientific statement is an expert analysis of current research and may inform future clinical practice guidelines. In this scientific statement, the consensus panel

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the United States. On average, one American dies every 34 seconds of cardiovascular disease – disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Stroke, a disorder of the blood supply to the brain, is the leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the country, with nearly 800,000 strokes occurring annually. Early detection of life-threatening heart disorders, stroke, and other diseases is possible using vascular testing procedures in hospitals, outpatient centers, and physicians' offices. Echocardiography is used to assess different areas of the heart and can detect heart disease or signs of serious conditions. Many factors contribute to an accurate diagnosis based on vascular testing and echocardiography. The training and experience of the technologist and sonographer performing the procedure, the type of equipment used, and the quality assessment metrics each facility must measure all contribute t

heart attack symptoms in women over 40 :: Article Creator Colorado Cardiac Nurse, After Three Heart Attacks, Offers Survival Tips: 'Listen To Your Gut' As a registered nurse in Colorado, Jennifer Harlan cares for cardiac patients for a living — but in the past five years, she herself has survived three heart attacks.  Last week, Harlan, 53, had the opportunity to meet with the EMS crew who saved her life at HCA Healthcare's Sky Ridge Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. "I cannot thank them enough — they are the reason I am here today," she said. Harlan revealed the details of her heart health journey — along with her prevention tips — to Fox News Digital. DOES THE FLU INCREASE THE RISK OF HEART ATTACKS? Her first heart attack was in February 2018, when she was just 47 years old, she said. "I woke up in the middle of the night with distinct symptoms of a heart attack — shooting pain down my left arm,
