Coronary Artery Stents: From the Beginning to the Present

Image
heart stent issues :: Article Creator Recovering After A Heart Stent Procedure After receiving a stent to treat a narrowed coronary artery, you may be back to your normal activities within a week. But you may have to make some lifestyle changes to maintain healthy heart function. If you've been diagnosed with a blockage in an artery supplying blood to the heart muscle (coronary artery), you may be a candidate for a stent procedure. A coronary stent is a small mesh tube that's inserted into an artery where plaque has built up and narrowed the space for blood flow. The stent helps open the artery for better blood flow and healthier heart function. Recovering from a heart stent procedure usually requires medication and some lifestyle changes. But a full recovery is typically much faster than bypass surgery, which is the other main alternative treatment for a blocked coronary artery. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Inst...

Baseline characteristics Data were generated from 1516 patients who underwent coronary angiography and carotid ultrasonography. The median age of the individuals was 64 years, and 48.3% were male. The patients were divided into quartiles based on their TyG index. The demographics and features of the four patient groups are shown in Table 1. The four groups of subjects did not differ significantly in terms of age, sex, platelet count, smoking, or antilipemic agent usage. The highest TyG index quartile had a higher proportion of patients with hypertension, diabetes and antidiabetic agent usage ( P  < 0.05); higher BMI, SBP, DBP, Hb, Hb1Ac, FBG, TG, TC, LDL-C and VLDL-C levels ( P  < 0.05); and lower HDL-C levels ( P  < 0.05). Table 1 Clinical characteristics of individuals by TyG index quartile Full size table Relationship between the TyG index and risk factors for cardiovascular disease Symptomatic CAD patients were separated into two groups based on whethe...

On Tuesday, FDA advisors voted 10-2 that the benefits of the Paradise catheter-based system outweigh its risks when used to reduce blood pressure (BP) in patients with uncontrolled hypertension who do not respond to or tolerate antihypertensive medications, the proposed indication in the premarket application for the device. "It's not a panacea but it's certainly an option, and I think it should be approved," said John Somberg, MD, of Rush Medical College in Chicago. High BP is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke and affects nearly half of adult Americans. Fewer than one in four adults with hyper...

The ancestral origins of the cardiovascular system - News-Medical.Net

Coronary arteries are a vital part of the human heart, providing it with oxygen-rich blood so that it can work. By comparing the hearts of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and frogs, a multi-institutional team of researchers appears to have found evidence that the structure of our hearts evolved in a stepwise process from fish, through amphibians to reptiles to mammals. When animals evolved from living in the water to living on land, a significant remodeling of the blood vessels to the heart occurred, enabling survival without gills. Understanding the ancestral origins of our cardiovascular system could help us find the basis for certain genetic defects. Knowing the systems of various other animals also broadens the scope for studying heart disease and potential treatments. How do you take care of your heart? Being active, reducing stress and eating heart-healthy foods can all help to protect and strengthen this vital organ. Unfortunately, congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most c...
